Desi Pak is a bentonite (calcium-rich natural montmorillonite clay) based, environment friendly desiccant. It is widely used in industrial and electronic product packaging, shipping and storage applications throughout the world.
Bentonite clay is a highly adsorbent, chemically inert and non-corrosive naturally-occurring mineral. It attracts and binds water vapor readily within its highly layered structure which makes it a very effective desiccant. Even at full water vapor capacity, the bentonite remains dry and free-flowing and keeps it size & shape.
Why use it ?
Thanks to its adsorption capacity and competitive price, it succesfully protects goods against negative impacts of moisture such as rust, mold, mildew, fungus, decolorization etc.. in most packaging applications.
The adsorption capacity of the bentonite is remarkable and and even higher than silica gel at low humidity levels (less than 30% relative humidity, which is the case for most packaging environment) and it increases as relative humidity increases.
Desi Pak desiccants is certified under German DIN55473-B and also comply with JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) and U.S. MIL-D-3464E standards.
According to DIN55473 standards, 1 unit desiccant sachet will adsorb 3g of water vapor at 20% relative humidity (RH) and 6g of water vapor at 40% RH at a temperature of 25 C. Desi Pak fulfills these conditions.
Desi Pak desiccant sachets are packed in 100 micron HDPE barrier bags and each bag contains a 8% RH humidity indicator card so as to allow users check freshness of the desiccant inside easily by eye. The desiccant is fresh as long as the humidity card spot shows blue. In case it turns to pink, it means that the desiccant has lost its adsorption capacity and is no more convenient to be used.
Recommended usage table (for average normal conditions):
Barrier Film (Volume) | Desi Pak ® |
M3 | Units Recommended (DIN 55473*) |
0,004 | 1/6 (5,5g) |
0,008 | 1/3 (11g) |
0,012 | 1/2 (16,5g) |
0,024 | 1 (33g) |
0,048 | 2 (66g) |
0,095 | 4 (132g) |
0.19 | 8 (264g) |
0.38 | 16 (528g) |
0.76 | 32 (1056g) |
1.52 | 64 (2112g) |
* It is important to keep container air-tight for an effective usage.
* According to DIN55473 standards 1 unit desiccant weight is 33g for bentonite clay. Same is 25g for silica gel.
* The optimum quantity of desiccant to be used may change as per many parameters which affect performance of desiccant sachets. It should be decided after consideration of product type, packaging barrier film specifications, MVTR (moisture vapor transmission rate), storage and shipping time & conditions etc.
* Clay-bentonite based desiccants can perform satisfactorily under 49 C temperature. It would be convenient to use silica gel or molecular sieve for temperatures over 49 C.
