Humidity Indicator Cards (HIC) are designed to monitor relative humidity levels. They will change color when the indicated relative humidity (RH) is exceeded, by the help of a moisture-sensitive impregnated chemical. They can indicate RH levels from min 5% up to max 95% in response to the needs of application.
There are two types of Humidity Indicator Cards : Reversible (most common type) and Irreversible.
Reversible Humidity Indicator Cards spots continue to change color as the moisture levels change. Irreversible (also referred to as ‘Maximum’) Humidity Indicator Cards indicate the highest RH level to which goods have been exposed.
They are available in many type and configurations such as :
– RH spots variations : 5-10-15, 5-10-60, 30-40-50, 10-20-30-40, 10-20-30-40-50-60
– Humidity indicator types : Cobalt Dichloride / Cobalt Dichloride Free / Cobalt Free
– Color Change Indication : from Blue to Pink, from Brown to Green
Why use it ?
High humidity levels can cause serious damage to delicate supplies, goods and cargo ( i.e. electronic equipment). Many shippers/users apply dry packing with desiccants when their goods are in transit or storage throughout the supply chain. However, it is sometimes not easy to detect whether it suffices to keep them safe. Desiccants may reach their adsorption capacity before users realize that they need to be replaced.
Indicating high levels of relative humidity, Humidity Indicator Cards enable users to realize the need to replace the desiccant or check their goods against possibility of any damage. Although they are not precision indicators, they present a good inexpensive solution to indicate moisture content inside a sealed packaging.
